General Information

Tampere University of Technology (TUT) conducts scientific research in technology and architecture, providing highest education within these fields. TUT offers programmes leading to Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees. TUT is the second largest University of Technology in Finland and has a lively campus of 12,000 engineering and architecture students.

Leading research fields at TUT are signal processing based technologies, nanophotonics, biotechnology, intelligent mobile machines and hydraulic systems.

The university is state-owned (as all universities in Finland) and is subordinated to the Ministry of Education, though internally self-governing.

At present TUT cooperates (in student exchange) with 200 universities, 160 of them are with HEIs in EU countries. During 2008, about 430 exchange undergraduates were studying at TUT. In addition, there were 270 international students studying for the Master's degree. A total of 185 TUT students studied abroad in 2008.

Orientation
TUT International Office organises an orientation week for new international students at the beginning of the academic year (in August). During the orientation, you will register as a student and get a lot of important information concerning studies at TUT and student life in Tampere. Most importantly, you will have the chance to get to know your tutor group and your fellow students! The International Office together with the student tutors also organise fun leisure activities during the orientation week, e.g. Tampere city tour, International Office reception and Campus Olympics, to mention a few.

Study Facilities
TUT offers excellent study facilities. All the buildings in the TUT campus are located close by.

Each programme has an academic coordinator that provides study guidance for the students. They will help you, for example, to prepare your Personal Study Plan.

TUT students are given a TUT user account, containing a personal email address, a quota for own files and web pages, as well as access to the intranet and the computer classrooms. There are several computer classrooms available for students 24 hours a day. All computers have a wide range of software (word processors, spreadsheets, drawing packages, databases, math software, etc.). Printers and scanners are also available.

At TUT we employ a personalized student portal called POP, a tool and information centre for studies and student life. In the POP portal you can read news and announcements, as well as create your own reminders and to-do lists. In addition, it includes a calendar with your own notes, your course timetable and common activities. You will see your course results and sign up for courses and exams in the POP portal.

The University Library is located in the Main Building. The TUT Library brings together library and information services with a wide range of digital resources, such as electronic journals, books and databases. Currently, the library has a collection of nearly 10.000 electronic journals, including journals from all the well-known publishers. The Library also has over 30.000 digital handbooks and dictionaries, encyclopaedias, patents and standards from different fields.

Student Union
The purpose of the Student Union is to act as a link between the university and the students and look after student rights and benefits. Additionally, the Student Union organises all kinds of events and activities, such as concerts, film screenings, excursions and parties.
